Health and Air Quality

Research has linked regulated air pollutants such as ozone and particulate matter (PM), to lung and heart disease and other health problems EPA research continues to investigate the health consequences of air pollution and advance our understanding of the link between disease and poor air quality. The health impacts of mixtures of air pollutants are a current focus since we are exposed to many pollutants at the same time. Researchers are also exploring how some of our most vulnerable-children, the elderly and those with diabetes and other diseases-are affected by air pollution.

Results from these investigations are used to support the nation's air quality standards under the Clean Air Act and contribute to improvements in public health.
