Transportation Logistics/Supply Chain

Transportation Logistics / Supply Chain: Decisions made regarding the transportation of freight is not without environmental costs. Moving freight accounts for 20% of all the energy consumed in the transportation sector. Together, rail and truck transport consume over 35 billion gallons of diesel fuel per year, which translates into over 350 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. By 2012 ground freight transportation will consume over 45 billion gallons of diesel fuel and produce over 450 million metric tons of carbon.

Compliance Resources
Businesses and truck operators must be aware of regulations that apply to the service and repair of motor vehicle fleets (e.g., disposal of used oil, servicing air conditioners, and fuel storage in underground storage tanks) and anti-idling laws.

Sustainability Resources
Through innovative partnerships, EPA is working to reduce the impact of transportation related activities on the environment.
