Environmental Screenings Chanute, Kansas |
![]() |
Federal and state regulators have completed the second phase of environmental screenings in Chanute, Kan. These results are for the odor screening sampling conducted between August 2011 and March 2012 by scientists and technicians in a joint state-federal partnership between the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7. The odor monitoring effort was designed to sample and identify potential odor-causing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when odors were reported by the public to the KDHE spill line. Results indicate that the VOCs identified in the air samples were consistent with the amounts commonly found in urban outdoor air in the United States. The final report and associated data are available at the links below.
The final phase of environmental screening in Chanute involves ambient air sampling for particulate matter. EPA and KDHE began collecting these samples in December 2011. An interim report on the status of this study is also available in the links below. The data collected to date are very comparable and well below the PM10 National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS). Comparison of the Chanute screening level data set for PM2.5 will be performed with additional quality-assured continuous PM2.5 data from surrounding metropolitan areas when it becomes available.
