Green Research. Green Jobs. Green Future.
EPA will celebrate Earth Day with the 6th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo and EPA's P3 Award Competition on the National Mall in Washington, DC, on April 24 - 25, 2010.
The 6th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo, cosponsored by EPA and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, will bring together professional scientists, engineers, students, and business leaders to showcase innovative designs, research projects, and businesses all working to advance economic growth while reducing environmental impact.
The heart of the Expo will be the interactive displays, presentations, and unbridled enthusiasm of this year's P3 student teams (P3 stands for People, Prosperity, and the Planet). This national competition provides P3 teams with seed money to develop, research, and design scientific, technical, and policy solutions to address sustainability challenges.
P3 designs are aimed at achieving the mutual goals of economic prosperity, a higher quality of life, and protecting the planet. EPA and 40 partners launched the P3 Awards in 2004 to respond to the challenges of the developed and developing world in creating a more environmentally sustainable future.
Students and their faculty advisors compete for EPA's P3 Award and the opportunity to win up to an additional $75,000 in funding. With the additional funds, P3 winners move their winning designs to the marketplace or implement them in the field. EPA's P3 Award competition showcases innovative designs in the fields of alternative energy technologies, drinking water, agricultural practices, green buildings, and many other areas that offer the potential to improve society's sustainable practices.
Several former P3 Award winners have used their experience and designs to launch successful small "green" businesses.
