On March 12, EPA and L'Oréal cosmetic company announced a research collaboration to determine if EPA's chemical toxicity forecaster (ToxCast) can be used in cosmetics testing. ToxCast can rapidly screen chemicals to understand their potential impact on processes in the human body.
L'Oréal is providing EPA $1.2 million in collaborative research funding in addition to data concerning the safety of chemicals found in cosmetics. EPA will use ToxCast to screen the substances found in cosmetics and will compare the results to L'Oréal's data. This will help determine if ToxCast can be used to assess the safety of chemicals in cosmetics. The findings from this collaborative research could lead to safer cosmetics and more efficient testing of chemicals in cosmetics.
