February, 2013:  Online SmartDriver for Highway Truckers Training Now Available
EPA SmartWay and the Natural Resources Canada's (NRCan) FleetSmart program have teamed up to develop a new online voluntary, training program for North American truck drivers. The SmartDriver for Highway Trucking e-learning program is based on a similar classroom workshop, but can now be accessed online, enabling drivers with internet access to better balance their training needs and "down-time" away from home. There is no charge for the training program - it's free - just sign up and register at NRCan's FleetSmart website www.fleetsmart.nrcan.gc.ca/index.cfm?useaction=fleetsmart.smardriver&attri=16.

October, 12, 2012:  EPA SmartWay Honors Freight Industry Leaders for Supply Chain Efficiency
EPA honored 40 companies with its 2012 SmartWay Excellence Awards as true industry leaders in supply chain environmental and energy efficiency. These top industry leaders have optimized the environmental performance and efficiency of their freight management operations as a step toward reducing their carbon footprint, saving fuel and strengthening their environmental performance.

September, 2012:  U.S. EPA’s SmartWay one of 14 federal programs recognized as Harvard “Bright Ideas in Government
On Tuesday, September 25, 2012, Harvard’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation recognized 111 innovative government initiatives as Bright Ideas, including the USEPA’s SmartWay program.  This year’s cohort hails from all levels of government—including school districts, county, city, state, and federal agencies as well as public-private partnerships—and demonstrates a creative range of solutions to issues such as urban and rural degradation, environmental problems, and the academic achievement of students. SmartWay was one of a select group of only 14 federal programs highlighted.  Programs were evaluated and selected by a team of policy experts from academic and public sectors.

June, 2012:  EPA Annouces Performance Requirements for Low Rolling Resistance Retread Tire Products
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is pleased to announce the first verifications of low rolling resistance retread tire products under the performance requirements announced in June 2012. Verified drive and trailer retreads are both available. More information about the SmartWay program, low rolling resistance tires and EPA-verified retreads can be found at www.epa.gov/smartway/technology/tires.htm.

EPA estimates that using verified low rolling resistance tires can improve fuel consumption by three percent when used in all axle positions on line-haul class-8 tractor trailers. Verified retreads, when used in the drive and trailer axle positions in combination with EPA-verified steer tires, can reduce fuel consumption by three percent relative to the most common retreads.

March, 2012: Summary of Fall 2011 U.S. Freight Sustainability Freight Summit
A summary of the proceedings and issues discussed at the U.S. Freight Sustainability Freight Summit held late last year is now available. EPA, in collaboration with the American Trucking Associations, Environmental Defense Fund and Retail Industry Association hosted the summit. At the summit, leaders from government, the transportation and freight, retail and manufacturing sectors came together to share their insight and experience in working towards sustainability in the movement of goods.

February, 2012: "Brighter Skies for Freight: Logistics industry perfects approach to environmental responsibility."Leading SmartWay partners discuss challenges and strategies for achieving transportation sustainability in this feature article highlighting issues raised at last year's U.S. Freight Sustainability Summit.

February, 2012: Retail Industry Leaders Association Releases Retail Sustainability Report. Retail Industry Leaders Association, a SmartWay Affiliate, recently released a first ever Retail Sustainability Report. The report highlights key sustainability trends and challenges in the retail sector, as well as opportunities to enhance performance and create savings. The report details the operational strategies and solutions used by industry to achieve sustainability. SmartWay is highlighted in the transportation section of the report as a key strategy for many U.S. businesses.

November 17-18, 2011: The U.S. Freight Sustainability Summit cohosted by U.S. EPA SmartWay, American Trucking Associations, Environmental Defense Fund and the Retail Industry Leaders Association, featured leaders from companies and organizations that are invested, engaged and actively pursuing sustainability in the U.S. freight sector. These leaders and stakeholders shared their insights and experiences in successfully integrating sustainability into their transportation management and business practices.

October 4, 2011: EPA Recognizes 2011 SmartWay Champions

EPA recognized six individuals and six teams from SmartWay partner organizations who have made a strong and lasting contribution to SmartWay's mission to reduce the economic, environmental and energy footprint of goods movement. These partner representatives are being recognized as the 2011 SmartWay Champions. The Council for Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), a SmartWay affiliate, hosted the SmartWay champion program during the 8 am plenary session on Tuesday, October 4.

June 28, 2011: EPA Announces SmartWay Drayage Program

EPA launches the SmartWay Drayage Program at the Port of Charleston, South Carolina with the Coalition for Responsible Transportation (CRT) and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). The SmartWay Drayage Program recognizes Partners for reducing diesel emissions from port drayage trucks.

May 16, 2011: SmartWay considered leading example of a successful market-based green supply chain initiative

The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) states that SmartWay Transport Partnership is considered to be the leading example of a successful market-based-initiative that supports the greening of freight transportation supply chains.

April 1, 2011: SmartWay Ranks First in American Shipper Survey

SmartWay ranked first among all the choices of supply chain sustainability programs used by leading retailers and manufacturers, according to a survey conducted by American Shipper.
