SmartWay Newsletter--The E-Update

What's New with SmartWay: September, 2011

In this Edition:

Media Honor Roll-Take 2:  Now That’s Smart!

EPA enhanced its iconic “Product on Wheels” campaign portfolio with a new print advertisement. "Now That's Smart" is designed to make the industry aware of the new SmartWay Transport Partnership advancements and to attract additional SmartWay partners.  Last month we talked about five fine publications that ran our ad at no cost to EPA. We are happy to report that three more industry journals have supported our outreach efforts!

Affiliates Pick 3 for SmartWay Every Day

In 2011, there are thousands of organizations committed to protecting and conserving the environment by seeking innovative solutions that encourage long term sustainability. Companies large and small as well as associations and member organizations lead the way in making sure that we all reduce the impact of our activities on the environment.

SmartWay affiliates are no different.  They are uniquely positioned to reach out and encourage their members to contribute to our mutual goals for clean air, sustainable transportation and economic growth by participating in SmartWay.  So when asked to consider taking just a few simple actions that would make a difference to our environment by taking part in the  “Pick 3 for SmartWay” challenge, our Affiliates answered the call.  The “Pick 3 For SmartWay" initiative  challenged SmartWay affiliates to choose at least three activities from the Affiliate Tool Kit as a way to meet their commitment to advance and support the mission and goals of SmartWay to their members. Affiliates were encouraged to use the various resources on their intranet site, public website, member newsletters – wherever their members get information about their commitment to a cleaner environment.

Almost all the Affiliates we spoke with acknowledged that environmental responsibility doesn’t stop with their organization or facility. They all agreed that encouraging their members to practice good environmental stewardship and to consider sustainability as part of their way to do business is very important! With that in mind, let’s look at some of the ways affiliates have used SmartWay materials to support our goals of improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

American Trucking Associations

Glen Kedzie of American Trucking Associations (ATA) said that they pick 3 for SmartWay everyday!  ATA is very committed to the goals of SmartWay – in fact they have included SmartWay as one of their six industry pillars for reducing the carbon footprint of trucking. ATA distributed the “Reflects Well” print ad via Transport Topics, one of the nation’s leading news print for the trucking industry, as a way to make their members and others in the industry aware of the benefits and the availability of SmartWay Designated tractors and trailers.

The International Air Cargo Association of Chicago

The International Air Cargo Association of Chicago (IACAC) prominently displays the “Proud Supporter” logo on their website and in marketing materials. In addition, IACAC placed the “Join SmartWay” article in their member newsletter entitled The Pallet.  Heidi Maschmann, Green Program Manager at IACAC, says she has received several positive comments from their membership about SmartWay!

Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards

Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards

Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards (VICS) believes that promoting SmartWay strategies brings value to their members.  To that end, they want their members and the public to know that they are a proud SmartWay affiliate so they placed the”Proud Supporter” logo on their website. In addition, VICS educated their 500 members on SmartWay by posting the general SmartWay overview presentation as well as SmartWay Tractor and Trailer information on their website.

Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air

Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air

Jessica Lawent of the Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air is adamant about making sure her members are aware of the mission and goals of SmartWay.  She posted SmartWay information, logo and relevant links on their website.  Wisconsin’s Partners for Clean Air distributed our Earth Day letter to their members that have fleets, encouraging them to join SmartWay.  Jessica and others from Wisconsin’s Partners for Clean Air hosted a Green Car Show during Earth Week at their DNR Milwaukee worksite in which staff was encouraged to consider cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles. The Green Vehicle Guide and SmartWay scores were featured.

North Central Texas Council of Governments

NCTCOG Logo

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) was pleased to “Pick 3 for SmartWay”.    To improve air quality in North Central Texas, NCTCOG provides outreach and information to its partners and related industry members that may benefit from the program.  NCTCOG joined the Earth Day Challenge by publishing several newsletter articles about the SmartWay Certified Vehicle Program to raise awareness from the diverse audience that NCTCOG reaches through these publications. Readers include the general public, Clean Cities members, regional subscribers, and NCTCOG staff.

The following articles have been published by NCTCOG:

  • “The SmartWay Certified Program” was published in Air North Texas Clean Air Mail
  • “The SmartWay to Save” was published in It’s Your Region and Clean Cities News Flash

SmartWay learned that affiliates do their part to make a difference.  We thank all affiliates who participated in the 2011 “Pick 3 for SmartWay” challenge and look forward to working with you today and everyday!
