This graph shows the average idle hours for each truck class reported by SmartWay Truck Carriers for the 2012 data year. The average was computed by using the idle hours reported for each fleet, and averaging those numbers within each truck class. This average is not weighted by the number of trucks per fleet.

Trucks are grouped into categories that reflect typical types of operation, load, duty cycles, etc. within each group, so that comparisons can be more properly made within and between these categories.

Based on data for 2012, this chart represents the range of average annual idle hours per truck reported by Class 8B SmartWay Truck Carrier fleets. Class 8B trucks are commonly used for long-haul freight transport.

The line is made up of individual points, each of which corresponds to an individual fleet's performance. To preserve confidentiality, no fleet name is associated with any data point. Slightly over two-thirds of SmartWay Class 8B truck fleets report 1000 or fewer hours of idling per truck annually, but the curve rises abruptly at the level of 1800+ hours per truck annually for the highest 2% of fleets reporting.
