Round 3-3a: Clarify the Role of Cost in the Remedy Selection Process
Reform Description
To clarify the important role that cost plays in developing cleanup options and selecting remedies at Superfund sites, EPA developed a fact sheet (see Documents below) in September 1996.
This fact sheet does not elevate or establish a new role for cost in the Superfund program, but rather summarizes the current role of cost in the Superfund program as established by CERCLA, the National Contingency Plan (NCP), and current guidance. The fact sheet also describes recent initiatives aimed at enhancing the cost-effectiveness of remedial actions.
The document is used by EPA staff as a resource tool when remedy selection documents are reviewed for national consistency.
