Current NPL Updates: New Proposed and New Final NPL Sites

The National Priorities List is updated periodically, as mandated by CERCLA (CERCLA Overview). EPA publishes the list of NPL sites in the Federal Register. The current update, December 12, 2013, proposes the addition of eight sites and adds nine sites to the NPL.

The Superfund program publishes documents with each rulemaking adding or proposing sites to the National Priorities List (NPL). Notification and listing of the sites are published in the Federal Register.

Depending on the action being taken by EPA, the Federal Register notice describes either the addition of sites to the NPL (final rule) or the proposal to add sites to the NPL (proposed rule). Notices for both actions provide a list of sites; background information about the NPL process, including information about the Superfund rules; and other site actions. The proposed rule notice also provides information about submitting comments on the sites proposed.

In addition to proposing new sites to the NPL, the December 12, 2013 proposed rule solicits additional comments on the previously proposed Smurfit-Stone Mill site in Missoula, Montana, based on new references added to the HRS documentation record. Additional comments will not be accepted on other HRS scoring issues related to the Smurfit-Stone Mill site that could have appropriately been raised during the original comment period and are not based on information provided in these additional references. See Federal Register notice provided below for more details.

In addition to adding sites to the NPL, the December 12, 2013 final rule includes a name change of the B.F. Goodrich site in Rialto, California, to Rockets, Fireworks, and Flares (RFF). See Federal Register notice provided below for more details.
