Participating Cities
Region 6 – Dallas
Dallas was the first pilot project. The city of Dallas, the North Central Texas Council of Governments, and the EPA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) launching the initiative in March 2007. They met with 60 stakeholders and identified 7 projects:
- Urban Heat Island and Stormwater Mitigation
- Green Taxi Program
- Green Buildings Project
- Development of a Greenhouse Gas Strategy
- Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency Outreach
- Site Assessment Visits Plus Program
- Small Off-Road Equipment Replacement and Retrofit

Region 7 – Kansas City
Kansas City (includes both Kansas and Missouri) initiated their effort in July 2007 and held a formal MOU signing event with all stakeholders on January 30, 2008. Projects include:

- Five Green Things
- Be Water Wi$e
- Solar KC
- Parking Lots to Parks
- KC Idle-Free

Region 3 – Philadelphia
Region 3 is the first of our national expansion and began in late 2008. The City of Philadelphia, PECO Energy Company, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Clean Air Council have joined the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission as charter partners in bringing the Delaware Valley a set of diverse projects aimed at improving air quality and enriching the broader environment. The SSI team has selected five projects to begin work on:
- Energy and Climate
- Fossil-fueled Engines and Motors
- Community Livability
- Land Use Transportation Strategies
- Innovative and Sustainable Practices

Benefits to Becoming a SSI City
Benefits to the cities include: assistance in building a sustainable framework and developing project plans to address multiple priorities specific to their area; one EPA point of contact who acts as a catalyst and facilitator in developing public and private partnerships; network of collaboration and resources across federal agencies and partners; all of which results in an integrated solution that encompasses multiple media approaches.
Becoming a SSI City
Under SSI, there is no one definition for a project location. A project location can vary between one individual city, a larger area around a city, or several cities. For example, the metropolitan area of Dallas is considered one project location while Kansas City, Kansas and Missouri are considered one project location. A tribal reservation would also be considered a project location.
