Basic Information
The TRI.NET application is focused on capabilities a user needs to analyze TRI data effectively, such as a robust ad hoc query capability and the ability to integrate with mapping. In addition, the application uses the latest mapping technologies of Virtual Earth, Google Earth, and Google Maps for Mashups.
TRI.NET is consistent with EPAs interest in "Web 2.0" applications as it leverages current technologies to create a more agile environment that takes advantage of the capabilities of modern computing platforms on the user side and Internet capabilities to serve up data and provide geospatial services.
Architecture
The data engine is developed in the Microsoft .NET framework for querying large enterprise databases. The software uses the Firebird embedded Relational Database Engine, a high-performance open source data engine. The application is also tightly integrated with the latest mapping technologies in the Web 2.0 space.
Data Application
EPA TRI data and other data layers have been ported over to the application. The TRI data has been enhanced with several value-added data layers including Environmental Justice, Tribal Lands, Watershed, Census and U.S Mexico Border. In addition to pounds-based TRI data, TRI.Net also includes Toxicity x Pounds based Hazard information to assess toxicity.
Automatic Updates
To ensure users will have easy access to the latest versions of TRI data and software, this application uses auto-updating by deploying software and data updates automatically. Data and software updates are handled by an auto-update feature that connects with a Web server to download the latest data and software. The software automatically checks for updates when it starts and notifies the user if new data or software is available.
Maps
Virtual Earth, Google Earth, and Google Maps technologies are leveraged to provide Mashups that connect EPA data to maps. The application renders maps in both Google Maps and Google Earth dynamic mapping environments. Once an ad hoc query of TRI facilities is completed the facilities can then be mapped and EPA reports can be run. The application is synchronized with the latest FRS locational reference data for mapping.
My TRI Neighborhood
The software also allows users to get a micro picture of TRI releases by showing TRI releases in small communities and mapping those TRI facilities releasing chemicals in their neighborhood. The software has the ability to geocode addresses so that the user can base queries on the ad hoc neighborhood.
What's New
December 2011 --
- SOFTWARE UPDATE -- The current software update as of December 2011 (version 1.2.1 ) is now available. This new software MUST be installed in order to access any 2010 data sets. Version 1.2.1 will continue to work with any datasets currently installed on your machine, but will not work with any data updates you might download.
- DATA UPDATES -- The 2010 national analysis data (as of December 2011) are now available. They can be installed by using the updater feature of TRI.NET.
- Toxicity Equivalency weighting of Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds was started in 2008. A TEQ data Table for Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds Toxicity Equivalency (TEQ) Weight (in grams) is available for 2008-2010. Tables include only those facilities which have provided sufficient information for EPA to display TEQs.
- Data tables for Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds (in grams) are available for reporting years 2000-2010 for the 2010 NA. Use for Dioxins' trends by GROUPING by Year.
- Note: Value-added data layers have not been updated with facilities reporting for the first time in 2010. New facilities may “disappear” in analyses using the value-added data layers.
February 2011 --
- SOFTWARE UPDATE -- The current software update as of February 2011 (version 1.2.1) is now available. This new software MUST be installed in order to run TRI.NET properly on a 64-bit machine (i.e., Windows 7).
- DATA UPDATES -- The current data updates (as of February 2011) are now available. The updated data are designated with "UP" in the dataset name and can be installed by using the updater feature of TRI.NET.
December 2010 --
- SOFTWARE UPDATE -- The current software update as of November 2010 (version 1.2.0) is now available. This new software MUST be installed in order to access any 2009 data sets. Version 1.1.6 will continue to work with any datasets currently installed on your machine, but will not work with any data updates you might download.
- DATA UPDATES -- The current data updates (as of November 2010) are now available. Updated data for years 1988-2009 are available. The new data as well as the 2009 National Analysis (NA) data can be installed by using the updater feature of TRI.NET.
- Toxicity Equivalency weighting of Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds was started in 2008. A TEQ data Table for Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds Toxicity Equivalency (TEQ) Weight (in grams) is available for 2008-2009. Tables include only those facilities which have provided sufficient information for EPA to display TEQs.
- Data tables for Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds (in grams) are available for reporting years 2000-2009 for the 2009 current data update as of November 2010 and the 2009 NA. Use for Dioxins' trends by GROUPING by Year.
April 2010 --
- The following items have been disabled temporarily...
- Metropolitan Area data layer -- A Census Metropolitan Statistical Areas layer based on the U.S. Census Bureau 2009 Tiger Line was added. This allows TRI data to be easily aggregated to the metropolitan area for comparison and analysis.
- Watershed Area data layer -- A Watershed layer based on Hucs compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey was added. Watersheds are natural and manmade stream-drainage areas which are organized by Hydrologic units. This allows TRI data to be easily aggregated to the watershed area for comparison and analysis.
- Tract data layer -- A Census Tract layer based on the U.S. Census Bureau 2009 Tiger Line was added. This allows TRI data to be easily aggregated to the census tract for comparison and analysis.
- Census Regions are now supported. This adds regional capability in addition to EPA Regions.
- Environmetal Justice features were added to maps.
