EPA held a training workshop on the PM2.5 Implementation Program and the Area Designation Process for the 2006 PM2.5 Standards for EPA, state, local, and tribal personnel on June 20-21, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois. EPA Region 5 hosted the workshop.

The workshop provided information on two main topics: 1) the issues to be addressed in State implementation plans due in April 2008 for areas designated in 2005 as not attaining the fine particle national ambient air quality standards; and 2) the upcoming process for designating areas not attaining the 2006 revision of the 24-hour fine particle national ambient air quality standards.

Presentations covered a range of subjects, including treatment of PM2.5 precursors, determining attainment dates, control measures, air quality modeling, guidance on the designations process, and analytical techniques for identifying potential nonattainment area boundary recommendations.
