Public Notice: EPA Begins Review of the Kentwood Landfill Superfund site
Summary
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a five-year review of the Kentwood Landfill Superfund site, located at 4900 Walma Ave. in Kentwood, Michigan. The Superfund law requires regular checkups of sites that have been cleaned up – with waste managed on-site – to make sure the cleanup continues to protect people and the environment. This is the sixth five-year review of this site.
EPA’s cleanup of the Kentwood Landfill Superfund site was largely completed by 1995 and included:
- covering the landfill with a layer of clay and topsoil
- removing contaminated sediment
- installing gas vents, secure fencing, and new drainage ditches
- long-term groundwater and drainage water monitoring
- filing deed restrictions to prevent construction activities from damaging the landfill cover and to prevent drinking wells from being installed in the landfill
More information is available at the Kent District Library, Kentwood Branch, 4950 Breton Road SE, Kentwood, Michigan and on the Kentwood Landfill Super Site webpage. The review is projected to be completed by October 2024.
