Upcoming Cleanup Operations at Former Housing Complex
This fall, crews working for Industrial Development Advantage of East Chicago (IDA) will begin soil cleanup activities at the former West Calumet Housing Complex property, part of Zone 1 of the USS Lead Superfund site. The activities will include stockpiling clean soil, excavating contaminated soil, and transporting excavated soil for off-site disposal. Excavation of contaminated soil is expected to begin this November. Work will pause in the winter and resume in Spring 2024. The cleanup is expected to be completed by July 2024. Once the cleanup is complete, IDA will begin construction of a logistics center.
All truck traffic will enter and leave the site via 151st Street. IDA is required to take measures to minimize dust during transportation, excavation, and backfill activities. Onsite air monitoring will be conducted. EPA and its representatives will be onsite full time during cleanup activities.
