MICHIGAN MAN SENT TO JAIL FOR DUMPING HAZARDOUS WASTE
William M. Jones of Highland Park, Mich., who was convicted of violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act in August, was sentenced on Nov. 30, to serve 16 months in prison, to pay $30,000 in restitution to EPA for cleanup costs and to serve two years of supervised release. The sentencing took place in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit. In the spring of 1997, Jones and others disposed of several thousand containers of hazardous waste inks from the Morgan Artcraft Screen Print Co. The inks were abandoned at an unused warehouse in Detroit. Some of the abandoned inks were flammable and others contained lead. Exposure to sufficient quantities of lead can cause neurological disorders in people. The EPA Superfund program paid $30,000 to remove and properly dispose of the abandoned inks. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center and was prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
