(Boston, Mass. – March 5, 2008) The Town of Pepperell, MA Wastewater Treatment Facility was recently selected by EPA for a Regional "Operations and Maintenance Wastewater Excellence Award".

The staff of the Pepperell facility, led by Mark Richardson, Superintendent, and Carmen DeFillippo, Chief Operator, was recognized by EPA's New England Office for exceptional work in operating and maintaining the plant. In addition, the Town of Pepperell was acknowledged for its outstanding support. The plant was among seven facilities in New England acknowledged for exemplary performance during 2007. The Central Regional Office of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection was instrumental in nominating this facility.

“The professionals operating these wastewater treatment plants, as well as the municipalities and the state environmental agencies that support them, are key to keeping our environment healthy. I am proud to give them the credit they deserve,” said Robert W. Varney, regional administrator of EPA's New England Office.

The EPA Regional Operations & Maintenance Excellence Award was established to recognize and honor the employees of publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their commitment to improving water quality with outstanding plant operations and maintenance and on-going operator training. More often than not and particularly with the smaller facilities, conscientious operators and staff continue to perform exceptionally with limited resources.

“Having dedicated staff is crucial if a facility is to attain excellence. This award given by Region 1 of the USEPA is directly related to the efforts of all staff members,” said Richardson who would also like to recognize all of his co-workers; Carmen DeFillippo, Chief Operator; Susan Gurney, Secretary; Jeff Lee, Operator; Ed Nadeau, Operator; Robert Pearson, Operator; John Chamberlain, Collection System; Jim Hamilton, Collection Systems. “All those that work here at the Pepperell Wastewater facility should be recognized for their work and congratulated for a job well done”.

The staff and facility were recognized on January 30th at the annual New England Water Environment Association Conference in Boston. The Pepperell Wastewater Treatment Facility will have the opportunity to be nominated for a National EPA 2008 Operations and Maintenance Excellence Award this coming spring.
