Conference on Recycling Food Waste to Be Held in Vermont

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is co-sponsoring a conference this week in Burlington on taking food waste out of the waste stream and managing it in a way that is economically and environmentally sound. The three-day conference will take place from Aug. 28 to 30 at the Radisson Hotel.

The BioCycle Northeast Conference 2000: Focus on Food Residuals Management will highlight initiatives across the country that include uses for food waste generated by institutional, commercial and industrial operations that are good for the environment and economically beneficial.

Attendees will include: environmental/facility managers for restaurants, grocery stores, and food processors; state and local solid waste officials; compost facility operators; haulers; animal feed manufacturers; food bank managers; soil amendment marketers; and others interested in managing food residuals.

Opening speakers will include: Scott Johnstone, secretary of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, Elizabeth Cotsworth, director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Solid Waste; Joel Berg, coordinator of Community Food Security, at the US Drug Administration.
