MEDIA ADVISORY

U.S. EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner will join Senators Christopher Dodd, Joseph Lieberman and U.S. Representatives Gejdenson, Johnson and Kennelly at an event on the Connecticut River to highlight the importance of President Clinton’s American Heritage Rivers Initiative in Middletown, Connecticut on Monday, September 8 at 10 a.m. Browner will discuss the American Heritage Rivers Initiative and its importance to communities like Middletown in helping to revitalize waterfronts while protecting public health and the environment.
President Clinton announced the American Heritage Rivers Initiative in his 1997 State of the Union address to protect and restore America’s great rivers. Because rivers have played an integral role in this nation’s history -- by providing opportunities for trade and commerce, recreation, culture and community development -- the Initiative is aimed at providing tools and resources to help communities protect and revitalize their river communities. Ten rivers will be designated American Heritage Rivers this year.
