ALASKAN COMPANY AND OFFICIALS ADMIT TO ENVIRONMENTAL CRIMES
Doyon Drilling Inc., an Alaskan oil drilling firm, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska in Anchorage to 15 counts of violating the Oil Pollution Act, was fined $1 million and was ordered to serve five years probation. The firm also agreed to spend $2 million to establish an environmental compliance and training program for its employees. Michael Krupa, Doyon’s health, safety and environmental coordinator pleaded guilty to two counts of illegally discharging oil and hazardous substances and will serve one year and one day in jail and pay a $25,000 fine. Allan Sinclair, Doyon’s former toolpusher/rig supervisor pleaded guilty to concealing a felony and will serve four months of home confinement, five years probation and pay a $25,000 fine. On April 30, all three defendants pleaded guilty to illegally disposing of paint thinner, paint, oil and solvents by illegally injecting them down the outer rim of oil producing wells on Endicott Island, a man-made drilling facility located off of the northern coast of Alaska. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI.
