Contact Information: Lois A. Grunwald, U.S. EPA, (415) 744-1588

(San Francisco)-- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(U.S. EPA) today announced that a Technical Assistance Grant
(TAG) has been awarded to the Davis South Campus Superfund
Oversight Committee in Davis, Calif. The $50,000 award was
granted through the federal Superfund program and will help the
group review cleanup activities being conducted at the LEHR-U.C.
Davis Old Campus Landfill Superfund site, Davis.

"This grant will give the people living in the community an
opportunity to participate more fully in monitoring progress at
the site," said Jeff Zelikson, director of U.S. EPA's hazardous
waste management division. "It should result in better decisions
and greater public confidence in the actions taken to protect
public health and the environment."

This grant will allow the committee, on behalf of the Davis
community, to hire a technical advisor to assist it in
participating in the management of the investigation and cleanup
activities at the Superfund site. The technical advisor will
review and analyze the ongoing Superfund investigation and
cleanup and provide regular reports to the Davis community.

The TAG will be matched by $14,245 worth of community work
and will cover a three-year period.

In planning and implementing site-specific cleanup efforts,
U.S. EPA encourages participation by citizens who live near these
sites and therefore have a vested interest in ensuring the
success of cleanup actions.
