EPA, MDC, DPH to Announce Initiative For Reducing Beach Closures in Massachusetts

BOSTON – On Thursday, June 27, at 10:15 AM the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Metropolitan District Commission, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the City of Quincy will be announcing a major initiative to reduce beach closures in Massachusetts as well as the designation of Wollaston Beach as one of three Flagship Beaches in Massachusetts eligible for federal assistance to improve water quality.
The announcement will be made at a press conference in front of the Squantum Yacht Club along Wollaston Beach, in Quincy, Mass.
Immediately after the press conference, the speakers will be stenciling nearby storm drains with warnings to discourage dumping of oil or other material that would be washed onto the beach.
Speakers will include:

Howard Koh, Commissioner, Massachusetts Dept. Public Health
David Balfour, Commissioner, Metropolitan District Commission
William J. Phelan, Mayor, City of Quincy
I-93 South from Boston:
Exit 13 Neponset/ Quincy
At end of ramp, bear right under overpass and onto Neponset River Bridge.
Move to center lane and bear left over bridge onto Quincy Shore Drive
Follow approximately 2 miles (with beach on left) and Squantum Yacht Club is on left side
Route 93-North from the South:
Take Furnace Brook Parkway Exit
At the bottom of ramp, take 1st left onto Furnace Brook Parkway
Follow to end (approximately 3-4 miles)
Take left onto Quincy Shore Drive (beach will be on your right after the turn)
Follow 1 - 1.5 miles and Squantum Yacht Club will be on the right
