SOLAR ELECTRIFICATION PROJECTS EXPECTED TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY,
REDUCE GREENHOUSE GASES

Solar electrifiction projects in Bolivia and Sri Lanka have been approved for rural communities that do not have access to the electricity grid, thus improving the quality of life while reducing greenhouse gases. They were selected under the U.S. Initiative on Joint Implementation program (USIJI), which is directed by representatives of eight agencies and is a part of the Clinton Administration’s Climage Change Action Plan. The program encourages U.S. businesses and non-governmental organizations to offer to foreign communities their resources and innovative technologies and practices to help reduce greenhouse gases and promote sustainable development, that is, growth which does not impair the environment. The Bolivia project is intended to test the commercial feasibility of photovaltaic technology in rural areas. In Sri Lanka, plans are to utilitize solar electrification systems in 812,000 homes now dependent upon kerosene lamps for lighting and lead-acid batteries for electric power. There are now 28 projects in 12 countries under the USIJI program.
