ENVIRONMENTAL MINISTERS OF U.S.,
CANADA, MEXICO ISSUE COMMUNIQUE

The environment ministers of Canada, Mexico and the United States have completed
their annual meeting as members of the Council of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation. EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner led the U.S. delegation. A communique was issued in which the North American countries committed to working together as partners to develop a cooperative agenda to protect children from environmental threats. The overall objective will be to reduce human-made pressures on children’s health. The other commitments deal with the sound management of chemicals; releases of industrial pollutants directly into the air, land and water, as well as off-site transfers for treatment or disposal; citizen submissions on enforcement matters; cooperative efforts to help organizations improve their ability to achieve and maintain compliance, and improve their environmental performance; trade and the environment; and conservation and diversity.
