Special Agent Training
Special Agent Training
Newly hired EPA CID Special Agents complete a two-part training program. First, employees complete the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). Second, newly appointed Special Agents complete additional EPA specific training.
Part 1: Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP)
- Three months of intensive training at FLETC in Glynco, Georgia. This fulfills all the basic criminal investigative training requirements to address common knowledge, skills, and abilities that are expected of all investigators through. The training encompasses lecture, laboratories, practical exercises and written exams. Some of the subject areas covered are interviewing, enforcement and investigative operations, firearms, legal training, and defensive tactics.
- CITP Training, generally, is not required for new hires who have previously successfully completed CITP and approved equivalent curriculum.
- If a trainee does not meet CID’s standards at FLETC, a determination shall be made as to whether the trainee should be removed from employment.
Part 2: CID Training
- Completion of the Field Training Program with oversight by an assigned Special Agent mentor to evaluate operational efficiency.
- Independent completion of required EPA mandatory training courses and other assigned online training primarily associated with environmental regulations.
- Completion of a 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training course providing training on OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response standards.
- Completion of an introductory environmental investigations course led by senior EPA staff.
