Public Notice: Emergency hazardous waste permit for Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska
Summary
The EPA is requesting public comment on its approval of an emergency permit under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act for Eielson Air Force Base.
The emergency permit temporarily allowed base personnel to safely detonate countermeasure flares that were considered unsafe for routine disposal. The emergency detonation occurred at Eielson Air Force Base's Explosive Ordnance Disposal Proficiency Range.
The emergency permit was effective from November 4 to November 18, 2024.
The EPA authorized the emergency permit request because there was an imminent and substantial endangerment to people’s health and the environment if the hazardous waste was not promptly disposed of.
