EPA Order Ensures Proper Asbestos Cleanup at Former Goudey Power Station in Johnson City, NY
Johnson City, N.Y. – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized an agreement with NRGY Development, LLC, to clean up asbestos contamination and protect nearby residents at the former Goudey Power Station Site in Johnson City, New York. The order requires the company to remove asbestos, secure the 33-acre property located on the banks of the Susquehanna River and pay EPA’s future oversight costs.
“EPA is reducing the risk that people will be exposed to this asbestos and that the contamination will get into the Susquehanna River,” said EPA Regional Administrator Michael Martucci. “EPA is holding this company accountable for the contamination they have caused by directing NRGY Development to clean up the site and cover the government’s oversight costs.”
Under EPA oversight, NRGY Development will enhance existing security measures at the property and remove friable asbestos, which is asbestos that can get into the air and ultimately into people’s lungs. These steps build on emergency actions that EPA took in 2023 and 2024 to address this partially demolished and dilapidated former power plant. EPA cleaned contaminated roadways, consolidated asbestos debris and installed protective fencing.
The former Goudey Power Station operated as a coal-fired plant from 1917 until 2011. Since its closure, unsafe demolition activities left the property in a dangerous condition, releasing asbestos fibers into the environment and presenting a potential risk to public workers who access the site and nearby residents.
With this agreement, EPA is reducing risks for the Johnson City community and ensuring the property is cleaned up under strict federal oversight.
