Cleanup Status
Corrective Action at the former Childers Site (Site or Facility) is currently underway. EPA is currently evaluating recent groundwater analytical results and historic environmental reports to assess current conditions at the site.
Historical environmental investigations at the Facility were conducted under the purview of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP). The Facility submitted a Notice of Intent to Remediate to PADEP on September 10, 1998 and subsequently received liability release per the Land Recycling and Environmental Remediation Standards Act (Act 2) on December 10, 1998. The Act 2 Final Report and liability release documented the investigation, remediation, and attainment of site-specific standards for Volatile Organic Carbons (VOCs) in soil and groundwater on the Facility property.
In June 2010 achieved a positive determination for the Current Human Exposures Under Control Environmental Indicator (EI) and also for the determination for the "Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control" (EI).

Interactive Map of Childers Products Incorporated, Levittown, Pennsylvania
On December 25, 1985 a minor spill of polyvinyl acetate occurred. The spill was contained by a three-inch dike around the mixing tank. In 1988, a Phase I hydrogeologic investigation was conducted. During this investigation a tank tightness test indicated that the 4,000 gal xylene underground storage tank (UST) was leaking. The UST was located inside the building beneath the concrete slab floor. A subsurface soil sampling showed contamination of xylene and ethylbenzene. In 1989 a Phase II Hydrogeologic Investigation occurred. During this investigation the 4,000 gal xylene UST was abandoned, evaluation of ground water for tidal effects from the tidally-influenced Delaware River was done, free product from the monitoring wells was removed, further delineation of soil contamination by soil gas survey was conducted and further characterization of groundwater contamination. During this investigation, soil remediation was determined to not be feasible at the site, due the building location. In 1990, an Environmental priorities preliminary assessment was done which should there were eight SWMU or AOCs at the site. A Remedial Action Plan for soil and groundwater contamination was conducted and an Act 2 Final Report of Site Investigations Remedial Activities and Risk Assessment was conducted.
