Detailed Project Information
Description: Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is deploying 14 in-stream "trash traps" to capture floating litter from tributaries of Chattahoochee River. The traps are emptied on a weekly basis and any recyclable material is separated from vegetation and landfill. The goals of the program are to evaluate trash capture technology, reduce plastic pollution, and engage community members in water conservation efforts.
Project Partners: West Atlanta Watershed Alliance, Groundwork Atlanta
Current Project Outcomes: The project removed 3,370 pounds of trash in 2022, of which 25% (by weight) was recycled.
Long-Term Project Outcomes: The intended long-term outcomes of the trash trap program are the reduction of floating litter in the Chattahoochee Basin and greater public engagement with litter reduction and litter capture technology. Trash collection metrics are posted on our website and shared with stakeholders, researchers, and local governments.
