Description: Entities in Georgia's six coastal counties have joined forces against the nation's number one most littered item: cigarette butts. Providing comprehensive coverage of Georgia's coastal area, Georgia's Coast is Not an Ashtray is a regional educational outreach initiative. Consisting of cigarette waste receptacle placement, radio public service announcements, social media/video promotion, educational outreach & materials, drink coaster outreach, business sign placement, litter cleanups and pocket/car ash tray distribution, this program targets cigarette litter as it relates to coastal water bodies.
Project Partners: Visit Kingsland; Keep McIntosh Beautiful; Keep Liberty Beautiful; Pembroke Downtown Development Authority; UGA Marine Extension & Georgia Sea Grant; Keep Savannah Beautiful; Tybee Clean Beach Volunteers; City of Tybee Island
Current Project Outcomes: 100+ cigarette receptacles placed in public spaces; 30,000 messaged drink coasters placed in coastal restaurants and pubs; messaged t-shirts given away at outreach events; cup and pocket ash trash distributed.
Long-Term Project Outcomes: The goal of Georgia's Coast is Not an Ashtray is to change behavior via education to reduce cigarette litter.
