If you are concerned about a demolition in your area, please visit State Asbestos Contacts and call the contact listed for your state.
The asbestos demolition and renovation rules (asbestos NESHAPNESHAP, or National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants, is a technology-based standard of performance prescribed for hazardous air pollutants from certain stationary source categories under Section 112 of the Clean Air Act.) contain requirements to minimize the risk of asbestos exposure during demolitions and renovations. If the owner/operator of the demolition/renovation follows the asbestos NESHAP, the chances of someone being exposed to asbestos fibers is minimal.
State regulations may be more expansive than the federal requirements, which is why we recommend you contact your state's program. You could also inquire at the local level as there may be some local requirements a contractor must comply with, such as obtaining a demolition permit, etc. before a demolition/renovation operation can begin.
